Yesterday I made this cake for an autumn birthday. Chocolate, with chocolate-hazelnut filling and chocolate icing. Very, very chocolatey. It was my first attempt at making chocolate curls, which were easier than I expected.
For people with perfectionist tendencies (ahem), decorating cakes can sometimes be an exhausting pastime, but this one was really fun.
I began decorating cakes a few years ago. I took a Cake Decorating Class, in which I did fascinating things like making giraffe cakes and frosting roses that looked suspiciously like a species of cabbage.
Since then, I like doing occasional birthday cakes. However, I avoid frosting roses at all costs. Mutant pink cabbages are not very attractive adornments.
